Thoughts

Reflections on art making, process, and the evolving relationship between image, meaning, and experience….

What are some of the essential qualities of living creatively? Curiosity is at the top of the list. An awareness that there is so much to know, to feel, to understand, to marvel about. Second, clarity emerges from curiosity just as a tide pool reveals its depths the longer you wait for it to quietly still. Clarity leads you to align your goals, your preferences and your life. Community builds from this foundation, and with it, confidence that a creative life is sustainable. I wish this for you, for me and the world.

WWWhat if a life is not a set of fixed experiences, but something that is always forming….with edges that are soft, and boundaries that are shifting? Here, the landscape of you resists definition offering instead a sense of what might be discovered rather than what is already known. The map of each of us is still unfolding. In fact, what is most importantly, YOU may not be the most fixed part of your terrain yet. You are more. There is space for the quiet discoveries that shape you and your art journey along the way.

ImImagination is as real a modus operandi as physical sight and equally necessary when we consider what is needed to heal humankind. Art is a way to bring all the beliefs, emotions, and values that exist in the collective consciousness of our culture into sharper focus.

The final words of French philosopher Francois Rabelais were thought to be “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” This work, in much the same way, expresses hope and the search for meaning beyond our current existence, one that needs a great deal of imagination and trust in the process.

What is healing? And how do we nudge it into our art experiences? Healing happens as we begin to sense who we really are. How do we know who we are? That is the opening, the exploration for everyone who creates. Drop into a relaxed state. Breathe. Let your quiet compass guide you. Just observe what is happening. Let the wonder of the present moment tug at you. There is a wild sort of peace that heals in this moment.
